Off-Ice Stickhandling: The Key Points!
"It's not the drill. It's how you do it." Have you heard something like that before?
There are so many great hockey stickhandling drills out there; I've posted a bunch, and many others have as well. The thing is: you can have the greatest drills in the world, but if your execution and form are poor, they won't matter.
In this video I'll show you HOW to go about your drills. What should you be focusing on? How should you hands, head and body be positioned? Are your feet moving or just your hands? What common mistakes do a lot of players make when practicing their stickhandling, and how can you avoid them?
If you focus on the key points in this video, you'll get the most out of your off-ice ...

Hockey Moves: The Step Fake
A lot of hockey moves don't just require great stickhandling skills, but need to be combined with great skating skills as well. The Step Fake is one of those moves: sliding on your edge towards your opponent, while faking a shot. This can be extremely effective for opening up a shooting or skating lane to the next for you. In this video, I show you how to learn the move step by step, as well as...

Whenever I try standing on one leg while wearing my skates, i stumble over. Any idea how I could fix this?
Standing still on one leg on skates is extremely difficult. The more speed you can gather the easier it gets. Make sure the skates are tight enough so you don’t fall inwards, and if you do fall inwards a bit, try pushing your knee outward
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Big thanks man, I can feel my balance getting more stable.
@@kingk4882 😃😃😃
Great tutorial, love the drills, thanks for making such a beginner friendly tutorial 😊
You’re welcome! Glad you liked it!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool btw how long do you recommend these to do these drills for? I’ve just started and I have about 20-30 to spend on skates every other day
Skates before pants for sure
Im a former 6'8'' 250lbs basketball player (play pro and semipro for 12yrs) who just started ice skating and going to play hockey beerleague in Czech rep. Its pretty hard with this body, but Im not quitting :)... This was by far the best explanation of the hockey stop I have ever watched. Thank you for it! :)
You’re welcome! It might be tough to learn, but then you’ll have big advantages because of you size and reach 💪
Thanks for the video 👌
👍glad you liked it!
This video helps me, Thanks for this video.
You’re welcome!
Hi Marcell. Good to see that the tradition of teaching inline stopping techniques continue on RUclips. There must be a couple of thousand videos by now. Many RUclips skaters have developed a common terminology for stopping techniques, and I would like to ask you to adhere to that terminology. What you call "the stopper" is usually referred to as "the heal break". And what you call "the leg drag" is usually referred to as "the T-stop". If we strive to use the same terminology, in stead of re-inventing the wheel every few months, we can help each other search out the good stopping videos. Best regards, Tommy.
Hi Tommy, Thank you for your information. I will unfortunately not be able to abide by your request. There are often many different terms for the same skill. What is called a Mohawk in North America is called a hip-opener in Germany. Both terms are correct. What used to commonly be known as a simple tight turn is now for whatever reason called a punch turn. The list could go on. Nobody is trying to reinvent the wheel. Just to teach people how to stop, regardless of what the stop is called.
Hi Marcell I have never heard of the Mohawk. Or the hip-opener. And I have been inline skating for 20+ years and watched RUclips for as long as I remember. Please respect the terminology that has developed in the skating community. Try to search for "inline skating mohawk" and see how many hits you get as opposed to a search for "inline skating t-stop", you see the difference and why it matters?
This sounds silly but i never knew i can also learn crossover on rollerskates. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Yeah they’re pretty much just like on the ice!
Love your videos but speaking a little slower might help 😂 I’m trying to learn German :)
Haha I’m glad I’m teaching you a new language and some skills at the same time! Yeah sometimes when I get going I speak a bit faster. I only notice it afterwards though 🙈
Algorithmus Kommentar 👌
Great stuff. I am 54 and just started ice skating and playing ice hockey with the Mud Ducks of Cottage Grove. I am having problems getting used to my outside edge and gliding on the middle (I tend to still lean my weight on the inside edge of the blades will gliding). Look up our story if you can (Mud Ducks Hockey Cottage Grove, MN).
Das wichtigste für Sommertraining - tollerante Nachbarn !!! ;)
Gilt auch für mein ODR im Winter 😃
I like if you skating ❤ Thank you for teaching us
You’re welcome!
Wow! Amazing insight man. Good advice 👍
Thanks a lot!
Sooo... How do you stop? Lol
For beginners use a stopper. For more advanced stops check this video out: ruclips.net/video/DOkzoVgEUH0/видео.htmlsi=_RkJP3QL6M6q3qXW
@@MarcelsHockeySchool thanks!
The more I learn about stick handling (experientially), the more it seems like magic when I see it done well. You look like your stick has a magnet (ignore lack of iron, etc) that the puck just...sticks. Or finds its way smoothly back to the stick.
Haha thanks! It’s just thousands of hours of practice 😊
I really enjoy your videos. I am 62 and just learning how to play hockey. I am not very good but your videos have helped me learn how to play.
That’s awesome! It’s never too late to start, and I’m glad that I’ve been helping you out!
Sounds like you're using hard wheels from the noise. Can you do those turns on soft and super grippy 80A wheels? I'm on stock 80A wheels atm and the only way I can turn tightly is ironically with crossovers or putting my outside foot ahead of the inside foot. I found it easier to pivot both feet in that setup with the super grippy wheels. I've been trying your technique but it's really hard with super grippy wheels. I did try it over slippier surfaces like super dusty smooth concrete or glass tiled surface and it was easier, I can even do that "semi hockey stop" but not on regular pavement with my 80A wheels and also found it harder on my knees as well. Thanks
Yes I can do the turn with soft wheels outside, even with super soft 74As. What doesn’t work is the semi-hockey stop on the street with super soft wheels- they just grip too much. I think I was using 84A in this vid but I’m not sure 😃
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Thanks. It seems you're right. Just needed some practice. I used to turn in a similar technique, however, the outside foot is ahead of the inner foot. I sometimes almost fall on my butt with your turning style. The technique seems to cause heavy amount of wear on the wheels esp on the rearmost wheel, inner edge without doing a semi-hockey stop. The least wear turn is still the crossover. Problem with crossover is when you want to slow down during a turn, you speed up instead!
Endlich was gutes gefunden!!
Sehr gerne!
Hey Marcel, will inline skating improve my ice skating? I’m pretty new to skating overall
Hi, yes it will!
I have nothing to hide I do figure skating
will this also work in ice skating ?
Yes. Only on ice you can turn even sharper. I also have a full on ice turning video: ruclips.net/video/il4UslJVUQ8/видео.htmlsi=MC7XIB5PA1BF9xe7
Thank you for part 2!
Glad you liked the two vids!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool I just got back into playing rec-league adult roller-hockey, but I've never had a coach. Please let me know if you recommend any videos to help with positioning and general tactical play. Thanks!
@@CrappyCar that’s cool! I don’t have too many tactical or positioning videos, simply because I need a lot more people to film them and that’s difficult to get done. I do have a video out on 1 vs 1 defensive play (1 vs 1 offensive will be released in September), and also stuff like picking up a rim around the boards. I hope someday I’ll be able to do breakout videos and more team game stuff.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Great! I'm going to *check* those out for sure!
Just found this video, great tips, thank you!
You’re welcome!
Tall and skinny here with narrow feet. Shoe size 11.5. Skate size 9.5 but I feel like my skates are still too wide. Any tips?
Have you tried different fits? Bauer for example comes in three different fits based on width/volume (Fit 1, 2, or 3)
very helpful
glad you liked it!
Sorry, but I found this confusing. I wish you stuck with doing it with one side at a time.
Sad to hear it didn’t work for you ☹️
I just got myself a supreme m1 before always on the rental skate. I felt so much different especially the front and back of the blade are round, it’s more smoother and fast maybe because the blade are new ? The only problem I having right now is I can’t do any simple stop like snowplow (single/both leg) not sure have to use flat or inside edge to done it , can you give any tip for me pls ?
M1s are a huge step up from a rental, and the newer blade will defintely help compared to a worn down one. Don't get you hard one your edge when you stop; you want a fairly flat edge to shave the ice. If you angle the blade too much on the inside edge, it will dig in too much. I did a video on fixing your hockey stop; maybe it can help you: ruclips.net/video/dTEHoU9mSKA/видео.html
Intressanter Tipp, tolles Video.
Danke schön!
Just bought a pair of inliners for Junior .. straight away he went into the mohawk when he ran out of room to skate straight. Gamechanger also good for summer.
Wow, going into a Mohawk right away is impressive👍👍👍
@@MarcelsHockeySchool are hip openers a Mohawk? if not then Junior is doing hip openers ... 7 months is good we only get 5 months in FFB 🙂
@@duschdichtung2425 yeah hip openers are Mohawks. FFB really needs a roof ✊
Very good hockey channel with some very good content. Marcel deserves more subs!
Thanks a lot! I think I would have more subs if I did all my vids in English, but I started this to provide content to the German kids, so I’m fine with mixing it up, some vids in English and some in German.
I always like your videos but there's no English subtitles this time
Actually I did write subtitles for it and when I play the video on my phone the English subtitles get played on screen so please check your settings. I make sure that I always write subtitles, which is a ton of work, so I want to make sure that everybody can also see them!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Ahh first time I tried, there were only german subs. This is on my comp. I just checked again and now there are both. Thank you!
does barzal being bull legged factor in?
Well, most hockey players are actually a bit bow legged, because the abductors get worked way more when skating than the adductors. So I don’t really think it’s a Barzal-specific advantage
I wasn't here for hockey, initially, but now I want to get my stick out of the closet...
Time to start up again!
The intro song is played on some of the Hey Bear Sensory videos that I play for my son. I was very surprised when I heard it on the start-up!
Cool! I like the tune!
best technic tutor. i have try first drill and turn from him and it's work. like they said. German always work🤣🤣
I’m glad it helped you!
This makes so much sense. Just started rollerblading a week ago, and this video explains it perfectly. Thank you.
Glad you liked the vid!
Decent job explaining. I took power skating lessons and they told me I don't need lessons. It's like walking it just came au natural
great videos I returned to practice after long years and this is very helpfull but I still don't get the "quick start" at 3:20 I watch it on slow motion but it looks tough!
Thanks! The quick is basically: front leg (leg furthest away from our destination) does a big C-cut outwards. The other leg then crosses underneath. This sometimes is confusing because some skaters mix the legs up and want to bring the back leg in front instead of behind the C-Cut leg.
@@MarcelsHockeySchoolindeed that's me! thank you again!
erinnert mich an "bullyparade"
tutorials like these really help me out at the age of 29 lol. Did roller blades a couple of times like 20 years ago, now we back practicing and developing basic skills. And its hella fun. Its been 2 days since i started practicing after 20 years, and Im picking up fairly quickly i think thanks to videos like these, but I really struggle with stopping at the moment hehe. But we'll get there hopefully. Thanks!
Glad you like the vid! Stopping is tough on rollerblades, but here’s a video that might help you! ruclips.net/video/DOkzoVgEUH0/видео.htmlsi=nQF1ZGKHprJlZVM3
@MarcelsHockeySchool I checked that one out before this one already but thanks for the effort and reply appreciate it and ut vids too boss!
Hi, thanks for the info. Do you have experience with HDF instead? In Obi are quite cheap and in Berlin I can't find PE Boards. Thanks.
Hi, you’re welcome. I think HDF will be ok for a bit, but probably won’t last as long and make sure it doesn’t get wet.
This is great advice thank you 😊
You’re most welcome!
